Discovering George Merrick’s 7 Villages in Coral Gables

If you're familiar with Miami, you've likely heard of Coral Gables – the "City Beautiful." But have you ever explored the unique charm of George Merrick’s 7 Villages that are located within Coral Gables? These neighborhoods - planned and built in the 1920’s - are like stepping into a storybook, each with its own distinctive flair. All of the homes in the various villages are historically designated and in most cases, you will know when you have found them because while they do a decent job blending in to their respective neighborhoods, they do have a distinct style!

Let's take a little tour together.

1. Italian Village

Ever dreamt of strolling through an Italian countryside? The Italian Village (located south of Bird Road between Granada Blvd & Riviera Drive) brings a slice of Tuscany right to the neighborhood. Seventeen Mediterranean-style homes make up the Italian Village, complete with terracotta roofs and lush gardens. Live here and you’ll feel like you’re on a European getaway.

2. French Country Village

Bonjour! The French Country Village (the 500 block of Hardee Road) - inspired by 18th century country houses in France - offers a touch of rustic elegance. Think charming farmhouses, stone facades, and delightful, manicured landscapes. It’s like a trip to the French countryside without leaving Miami.

3. French Normandy Village

Stepping into the French Normandy Village (on the west side of LeJeune Road, just north of Bird Road) feels like entering a fairytale. Inspired by village homes in France in the 15th century, the homes here resemble quaint cottages with steeply pitched roofs, half-timbering, and stone exteriors. It's an enchanting little corner that captures the essence of northern France, and you will know you have found it when you see it.

4. French City Village

If you’re more of a Parisian at heart, the French City Village (located on the 1000 block of Hardee Road, just east of Maynada Street) is for you. Picture elegant townhouses with wrought iron balconies, exquisite gardens, walled properties and sophisticated designs. It’s a touch of Parisian chic nestled within Coral Gables.

5. Chinese Village

A walk through the Chinese Village (just south of US1 between Riviera Drive and Maggiore Street) is a journey to the Far East. The architecture is inspired by traditional Chinese design, featuring curved rooflines, intricate details, and serene gardens. It’s a peaceful retreat that’s both unique and culturally rich. Every home in the Chinese Village is connected with a common wall, creating a unique compound. This is the only place in Coral Gables that you will find roofs that are red, yellow and blue!

6. Dutch South African Village

This village (on LeJeune Road, just north of the Cocoplum Circle) is a tribute to the Cape Dutch architecture of 17th century South Africa. You’ll find whitewashed walls, gables, and thatched roofs, all blending harmoniously to create a picturesque neighborhood with a colonial twist.

7. Florida Pioneer/Colonial Village

Finally, the Pioneer Village, sometimes called the Colonial Village, (on Santa Maria Street) offers a nod to early American architecture. The homes here have a cozy, historic charm with their wooden frames, shutters, and inviting wrap around porches. It’s a nostalgic journey to America’s early days.

Exploring these villages is like traveling around the world without ever leaving Coral Gables. Each village tells a story, reflecting George Merrick’s vision of a diverse and culturally rich community. So next time you’re in Coral Gables, take a stroll through these villages and soak in the unique beauty and history they offer.
