Meet K-9 Buster: Pinecrest's Newest Therapy Dog Making Waves in the Community 🐾🌟
The Pinecrest Police Department has recently introduced its newest and furriest team member, K-9 Buster! As the department’s first emotional support dog, Buster is more than just a companion – he’s here to bring comfort, connection, and calm to anyone who needs it most. Whether at schools, public events, or simply out and about in our village, Buster’s mission is to foster mental wellness and build stronger relationships between the police department and the community.
Buster’s Journey: From Stray to Superhero
Buster’s journey began as a stray in North Carolina before being rescued and brought to Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Palm Beach County, Florida. With his calm and friendly disposition, Buster was selected for therapy dog work through the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office Paws and Stripes K-9 Therapy Dog Program. This unique initiative helps shelter dogs find purpose, while allowing trained jail inmates to participate in their rehabilitation by teaching the dogs voice commands and hand signals. After completing his training, Buster was paired with Officer Juan Barriga, who underwent a 40-hour training course to ensure both of them were ready to serve the Pinecrest community.
Buster in Action: Bringing Joy to the Community
Since joining the Pinecrest Police Department, Buster has already made a huge impact in the community through outreach and public events. Some of his recent appearances include:
March 12: Career Day at Pinecrest Elementary School
March 20: Legacy Apartments Dog Park Grand Opening
March 20: World Happiness Day at Pinecrest Gardens
April 5: Family Garden Day at Pinecrest Gardens
April 9: Formal Introduction at the Village Council Meeting
April 12: Inclusive Family Fun Day at Temple Beth Am (Autism Acceptance Month)
In every one of these events, Buster has brought his signature calming presence, lightening the atmosphere and bringing smiles to everyone he meets. He’s been a perfect fit for everything from school events to celebrations of inclusivity and happiness!

The Impact of Therapy Dogs in Law Enforcement
Buster isn’t just another dog on the job—he’s here to make a difference. Unlike traditional police dogs that are trained for detection or apprehension, therapy dogs like Buster are trained to provide emotional support and stress relief. They help officers, victims, and the community during traumatic events, interviews, or even just in regular outreach efforts. The presence of a therapy dog can reduce anxiety, increase trust, and create positive, supportive interactions with law enforcement.
Pinecrest is excited to have Buster as part of the police department family. His contribution to the community and his ability to provide comfort during stressful times speaks to the growing importance of emotional wellness and support in law enforcement. With his friendly, compassionate demeanor, Buster will continue to make a lasting positive impact, one tail wag at a time. 🐕💙
